Eight months ago I would have laughed out loud if you told me that I would not only be working out on a regular basis, but that I would actually look forward to it. In fact, I’m pretty sure I did laugh when my good friend Krista (that’s her in the picture) finally got me to come to the first workout here at DTP. There was no way in the world that I thought I would make it through the first workout (Turkish get-ups – definitely try them), much less come back for more. When I met the other friendly people working out at the gym, they all told me I would soon be hooked. Again, I laughed.
As I started coming to DTP, I couldn’t help but be amazed by the atmosphere of camaraderie, encouragement and motivation that you feel during each and every workout. Everyone you workout with is so friendly and supportive that you can’t help but be engaged and eventually find yourself enjoying your progress. Coaches Ali and Tom are masters at programming and teaching proper form such that you build strength and endurance, but most of all, don’t hurt yourself. For those like me who aren’t gym rats, athletes or even ‘active’ in real life, they help you scale the program so you push yourself to make progress without hurting yourself.
If you are new to CrossFit (like I was) don’t come expecting the typical gym you may have seen before. When you first walk in you will see that this is a place where serious workouts happen. You won’t see treadmills, elliptical machines or weights attached to machines. Instead you’ll find sledgehammers, tractor tires and real-life free weights. But don’t let that intimidate you. Ali and Tom are excellent at helping newbies like me feel comfortable and learn the ropes quickly. Best of all, the workouts are never boring or just repeating the same thing you’ve done a hundred times (like every other gym I’ve experienced.)
Eight months and 50 pounds later, I found that I am hooked – just like they said I would be. I can’t thank Ali, Tom and my DTP compatriots (mostly my friend Krista) enough for helping me achieve a new level of health, strength and fitness. It’s still a work in progress, but I know the best days are yet to come, thanks to DTP.
